Pandemic Possibilities

The changes we might experience as society living through this moment in History have been suggested in the media but a focus on this is, understandably limited, as scientists work intensively to understand the virus and save lives now and in the future. Whilst undoubtedly academic Psychologists will come on board, at some point, to research the socio- psychological impact that results from Covid 19, they might also find themselves writing about the missed global opportunity to pause and appraise our evolution and make the necessary to changes to ensure a fair, civilised and intelligent society. I look forward to reading these academic studies, which will quantify and measure ,allowing us to make valid conclusions about the impact of this global threat to our health but of equal significance is the recording of individual experience, thoughts and transformation through this pandemic. I am inviting everyone of all ages and walks of life to share your thoughts. Please get on board with your contributions no matter how small they might seem. It is when this is all viewed collectively that what we have lived through will take on meaning. Catherine

Pre pandemic, like a lot of people, my life was pretty full on. Between working and running around after kids and their activities, tending to the house and various pets, I never seemed to have much free time. Don't get me wrong, I loved spending my days off on various golf courses caddying for my girls and being part of their journey in their chosen sport and we always had plenty of family together time doing outdoor things, but I appreciated the times when I can just sit and read a book, which before this, tended to be late in the evening when the kids were in bed and my husband was watching some type of sport on TV. I'…

Me again:

So with reference to my first post and pondering and reading in recent weeks, how can we look to leverage a terrible event in the history of mankind in to changing things for the better. Well putting aside future pandemic planning there appear a myriad of possibilities. If people start throwing out ideas maybe the best can be implemented.

I see Scotland have put together a group to look at the future. (The Times 29th April 2020 Coronavirus in Scotland: Experts ponder life after the pandemic). I assume we will see this around the world.

My first initial thoughts.

Better Life quality and good for the planet: I hear in some European cities that some bus routes have…

Second time round:

Clearly this pandemic is terrible and the loss of life is tragic. The fact that we may be leading significantly different lives going forward is challenging to everyone.

Having said that I initially took the view that in human history generally we see some positives coming from tragedy, albeit sometimes years or decades later. Therefore I was relatively positive about the long term outcome as we saw political divides put aside and a common goal as an objective. I do now find myself somewhat disheartened as it appear the nationalistic, cultural and political divides bubbling up, indicating the same old prejudices and behaviours are entrenched and just waiting to take control at the earliest opportunity. Surely we…

If there is one word these strange times has taught me the true meaning of, it is harmony. Yes we all know what harmony is, but the difference is in feeling it, really feeling at many different levels; personally, culturally, environmentally ... How harmony can thrive even within the deep sadness and losses we are all seeing throughout this epidemic. It has made me slow down and savour my life - the birds are nearer, the skies are clear - we can see the mountain tops again. My work life has been totally shaken up - this crisis clearly accentuates the different work personalities, it's been very interesting. Leadership skills coming to the fore, selflessness, and others who get pow…

Interesting times with clearly so much to discuss that to try and encompass it all in one comment is impossible so I will focus on what has struck me initially.

I believe is this has cruelly exposed the wealth gap and therefore quality of life gap that has been growing in society for decades now. In my opinion money has become the token by which society has predominantly valued itself. I believe the way we value society has to change and the human race needs to use this situation as a catalyst for change. We are seeing many of the traditionally lowest paid roles in society keeping us going, they are exposing themselves to infection risk and are not armed…
